What is a mastectomy swimsuit, and do you actually need one?

Short answer: a mastectomy swimsuit is a swimsuit with pockets inside the bust to hold a breast form, plus a cut that covers more of the chest and underarm. You need one if you wear a form, or if regular swimsuits show more than you'd like.

What's different about it

From the outside, a good one looks like any other swimsuit. The differences are on the inside and in the cut:

Who it's for

Women who had one breast removed and want both sides to look even under the fabric. Women who had both removed, whether they wear two forms or none. And women after reconstruction or a lumpectomy who simply like more coverage at the neckline and underarm. The pockets lie flat when they're empty, so you don't need to wear a form to wear the suit.

Can't I just sew a pocket into my old swimsuit?

You can, and some women do. It works best on suits that already have a lining and a fairly high neckline. The catch is that the rest of the suit was cut for a different chest: the neckline may gape once a form is in, and the armholes stay where they were. If your old suit already covers what you want covered, a pocket kit is a cheap fix. If it doesn't, a pocket won't change that.

What to look for

Pockets on both sides (useful after a single or double mastectomy), an opening that's easy to reach, a neckline that stays put when you bend, and fabric with enough body that it doesn't cling when it's wet. Our guide to choosing a mastectomy swimsuit goes through each of these.
